Depression - also known as major depressive disorder, clinical depression, or major depression - is a medical illness that involves the mind and body. Depression can affect a person's family and personal relationships, work or school life, sleeping and eating habits, and general health. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression affects nearly 7 percent of the U.S. population, equating to 14.8 million American adults in a given year. Pharmaceutical companies are working hard to find medications to better treat depression. By participating in a research study, you may not only be helping yourself, but also helping to advance medical knowledge and treatment in the world of mental health.
